Solopreneur coaching: how to choose
Do you need a business coach? Free options (SCORE, SBDC), what good coaching costs, red flags, and questions to ask before you pay.
A coach can speed you up if you're stuck on something specific: pricing, positioning, or doing the work consistently. Coaching is unregulated, though, so choose carefully.
Start free
- SCORE: free mentoring from volunteer business owners and executives.
- SBDCs: free advising in every state.
- Women's Business Centers: training and counselling.
Before paying a coach
- Have they built the kind of business you want to build?
- Can you speak to two past clients (not testimonials you pick yourself)?
- What does a session or program include, and how do you get out of it?
- Do they promise specific income? That's a red flag.
Red flags
- Pressure to decide on the call, or "price goes up tonight".
- Encouraging you to put the fee on credit.
- Vague results with no clear deliverables.
